Severe Morning Sickness Can Cause Premature Birth

In some women, morning sickness pregnancy may be an indicator of more serious conditions later in life, including premature birth. So women who experience severe nausea and vomiting during early pregnancy should be able to manage the condition properly.

A study states that more than 23 percent of women who experience nausea and vomiting (morning sickness) severe in early pregnancy, will experience premature birth. "These findings underscore the importance of recognizing and managing morning sickness," said Dr. Gary Stanziano, leader of the study.

Approximately 50 to 60 percent of pregnant women experience some type of morning sickness during pregnancy. About 1 percent of pregnant women experience severe morning sickness known as hyperemesis gravidarum, which can lead to malnutrition.

Stanziano and colleagues analyzed information from 81,486 women who were pregnant between 2004 and 2011. After giving birth, women are given a question each experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy to affect her ability to perform work or daily activities.

About 5,200 women, or 6.4 percent of the participants surveyed reported experiencing nausea and vomiting that affect quality of life. About 1,800 women say it does not require intervention, while about 3,300 are dehydrated and require pharmacological treatment.

Of the participants who experienced severe nausea and vomiting, about 23 percent had low weight during pregnancy, compared to 13.7 percent of women who did not experience severe morning sickness. About 10 percent fell ill during pregnancy and having a baby with low birth weight.

The researchers are not sure why women with severe morning sickness experienced this. But poor nutrition and too little weight gain in pregnancy can lead to risk of premature birth and low birth weight infants.

Previous studies state that excessive weight gain pregnancy has been shown to dive associated with premature birth and low birth weight. But it turns out that low body weight during pregnancy also can put the same risk.

Fortunately, only a small number of pregnant women who experience severe nausea and vomiting that usually lasts more than 10 to 16 weeks gestation. If you experience this, consult with your doctor to get the best solution.

Although there is no cure for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but there are therapies that include supplementation extra hydration and nutrition on the monitoring physician.

"Changes in diet, such as eating six to seven small meals a day instead of three large meals, can also help," said Dr. Jennifer Wu, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City.

The findings were presented last week at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Dallas.

A study conducted at the University of Georgia states that gargling with sugar water can increase self-control. The study involved 51 students who were asked the following two types of self-control tests.

The first test aimed to deplete self-control, which research participants were asked to doodle a statistics book page freely and fully as possible. Since there is no specific limit, it makes the participants to devote all abilities, expressions and emotions into the streaks.

Then, participants were asked to perform a Stroop test to determine how much a person's ability to recognize colors when colors are presented in the form of words.

For example, a word inscribed 'blue' appears on the screen, but the word is colored 'red'. Participants had to guess the color of the writing, not the words inscribed on the screen. With this test, researchers can determine how far participants can control themselves and concentrate in seeing color and not read the words.

Half of the study participants were asked to gargle with a sweet drink made from natural sugar before the Stroop test. Students who gargled with water sugar significantly faster in responding to the color rather than words.

"Glucose can boost energy quickly, making the brain more easily concentrate again after making a mess of self-control such destructive doodle," said Leonard Martin, a professor of psychology who led the study.

People who are always lack of sleep will face greater consequences than fatigue and hard to concentrate. According to the study, poor sleep habits in the long run increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Scientists are investigating the reasons behind the increased risk. Some research suggests that our sleep patterns affect blood sugar levels, a hormone that controls appetite, and even the brain's perception of high-calorie foods.

A small-scale study published in the journal The Annals of Internal Medicine, adds to evidence, particularly at the cellular level. Lack of sleep apparently reduces the ability of fat cells to respond to insulin, the hormone that regulates metabolism and plays a major role in diabetes.

In the study the participants were asked to sleep 8 nights in a sleep laboratory. During the first 4 nights they sleep normal hours, and 4 hours of sleep the next night they were only limited to 4.5 hours.

Apparently, after 4 nights of sleep deprivation, insulin sensitivity fall 16 percent respondents. Furthermore, the insulin sensitivity of fat cells, down to 30 percent at those experienced by the obese or diabetic.

"Fat cells require sleep, and if hours of sleep are deprivation metabolically they will be disturbed," said Matthew Brady, a senior researcher.

When resistance insulin that once temporarily becomes frequent, the excess blood sugar and cholesterol will accumulate in the bloodstream, triggering heart disease and diabetes.

Brady said it is not known how the fat cells to recognize when we are lack of sleep. Probably due to lack of sleep will give your body's stress response, causing the release of the stress hormone hydrocortisone and norepinephrine, associated with insulin resistance.
